Artificial intelligence (AI) is classified into different types based on capabilities and functionalities. Based on functionality, AI can also be grouped into four categories. The 4 types of AI Reactive Machines are the simplest, as they have no memory and respond only to the present input. They cannot learn from past experiences. Limited Memory AI, which includes most modern systems like self-driving cars and recognition software, can use past data for short-term decision-making. Theory of Mind AI represents future systems capable of understanding human emotions, beliefs, and intentions, forming the basis for socially intelligent machines. Self-Aware AI, still purely imaginary, refers to AI with consciousness, self-awareness, and emotions, similar to the portrayal of advanced robots in science fiction.
Here are the types of AI based on capabilities:
Based on Functionability, they are classified into
Reactive machines
Limited memory
Theory of mind
Self-awareness

Reactive machines are the most basic form of AI. They operate purely
based on the present data and do not store any previous experiences or learn
from past actions. These systems respond to specific inputs with fixed outputs
and are unable to adapt.
These systems react to current scenarios based on their programming
without memory or the ability to use past experiences. An example is a chess
playing AI that only considers the current board state.
This is one of the best example for types of AI, IBM’s Deep Blue, which defeated the world chess champion Garry
Kasparov in 1997. It could identify the pieces on the board and make
predictions but could not store any memories or learn from past games.
This is a more advanced and future-oriented type of AI that is still in
development. It aims to understand human thoughts, beliefs, and emotions to
interact socially.
While this types of AI remains in development, it would allow machines
to engage in more sophisticated interactions by perceiving emotions and
adjusting behaviour accordingly. These systems can look to the past to inform future decisions. They use
historical data to improve performance over time. Examples include self-driving
cars that use recent sensor data to navigate.
This is a more advanced type of AI that researchers are still working on.
It would entail understanding and remembering emotions, beliefs, needs, and
depending on those, making decisions. This type requires the machine to
understand humans truly.
Collaborative robots that work alongside humans in fields like
healthcare, adapting their tasks based on the needs of the patients.
This types of AI uses past data to make better decisions in the future. It
stores information and observations for a limited time to improve its
responses. These systems use historical data to make decisions and predictions
but do not have long-term memory. Machine learning models, particularly in autonomous systems and
robotics, often rely on limited memory to perform better. Following are the best example of types of AI based on Functionability,
Self-driving cars: They observe the road, traffic signs, and movement
of nearby cars, and make decisions based on past experiences and current
conditions.
Chatbots that can remember recent conversations to improve the flow
and relevance of replies.
This is one types of AI based on functionability. This is a hypothetical future stage of AI that does not exist yet. It would possess human-like intelligence, self-awareness, and consciousness, including
emotions and sentiments. While we are far from achieving self-aware AI, it remains the ultimate
goal for AI development. It opens philosophical debates about consciousness,
identity, and the rights of AI systems if they ever reach this level.
This represents the future of AI, where machines will have their own
consciousness, sentience, and self-awareness.
This type of AI is still like theoretical and would be capable of understanding
and possessing emotions, which could lead them to form beliefs and desires.
Potential Applications fully autonomous systems that can make moral
and ethical decisions.
AI systems that can independently pursue goals based on their
understanding of the world around them
